How to Use Amazon as a Niche Spy Tool

Amazon shows what information is popular in a particular niche.  This includes the headlines people are responding to(product titles), what copy people respond to(product copy), and how people feel about a product(comments).

All of these should be taken into account when writing copy and creating your marketing. Let’s go over each one.

The Title Technique

Use this to generate interest in your ebook, product, blog post, email or even your blog itself.   You can see what the most popular product and book titles are by researching on Amazon. This is what people are responding to, in other words,  it’s good copy from which you can glean a lot of inspiration.

It’s not meant to copy, but to show you what is appealing to your Niche.  Here’s how to do it:

Go to amazon and search your niche keyword. As an example, we’ll be using the golf swing or golf improvement niche.

Here, you want to jot down the titles of the best-selling and most reviewed products, as shown below.

Also, head over to the books section for your niche. You can do this from the dropdown in the upper left.

Now, research the book best sellers and notate any patterns you see in the titles and language. Here are the books with most amount of comments.

So, what can we glean from these popular book titles?

Well, a golf star’s name may help.

Additionally, I see “lessons”, “mistakes”, and “fundamentals”.  All are keywords that this niche identifies with.

Also, take a look at those emotional words, Suck and Dammit! Those are important.

So, now let’s put this into action. If I were to make an ebook for my website visitors, I could use that information we just attained and say something like:

Learn Golf’s Fundamentals Before You Smash Your Clubs.

Don’t Suck at Golf, Lessons from Arnold Palmer

See?

You can also use these popular book title keywords as blog post titles, email headlines, etc.

Product Copy Technique

Next, we’ll look at the actual copy on the product pages and inside the books to get ideas for blog post content, product copy etc.

Here, you can really start to dig into your niche’s vocabulary and keywords. Notate repeated words and interesting copy that grabs you. This can also provide content structure and ideas for a book or series of blog posts. You can also mimic some of the statements for benefits and bullets.

The look inside feature allows you to see the Table of Contents, introduction and back cover.

Alright, so that allows you to get content and copy ideas.

Next, we are going to “get it from the horses mouth” and see what the actual people in the niche are saying.

Product Comment Technique

Click on the customer reviews and start to pour over the comments, good and bad. Look at 20-30 comments.amazon_reviews

Notate the following:

  • What people liked
  • What they didn’t like or want more of(you can fill these gaps with your own content)
  • Repeated language/Keywords(this is how you communicate with your niche)

I’m seeing repeat words like proper, golf swing, simple, easy, fundamentals, great, excellent, improve, illustrations.  I will make note of these and be sure to use them in product and email copy.

Now, to find what I can improve upon in my products and copy, I’m looking at the critical reviews.

From this, I can see repeated people are mentioning the book is dated, and also there is a problem that people are having with the club grip recommended in the book.

Those are two issues I can dive deeper into, possibly writing a blog post about.

Overall, the comments should give you a confidence as to what your niche wants, and what they need more of.

Alright, so that is how to use Amazon as a market research tool. Are there other ways that you use Amazon for research?
